Cook Street Castle purchases competing local retail hardware store and lumberyard in Victoria, BC

    News Release May 11, 2015

As you drive through the Greater Victoria area of British Columbia, you will notice the prominence of Castle Building Centres, and now there is yet another new Castle in town: Bay Street Castle Building Centre. This new location on Bay Street in Victoria was recently acquired and re-branded by the Hagels this past week transitioning to Castle from a competing banner.

The new owners, Frank and Vicki Hagel, also own and operate the nearby Cook Street Castle Building Centre. When they saw the incredible opportunity to own this very strategically located retail store, they jumped at the prospect of opening their second Castle location. The new store is positioned to serve the needs of Victoria and Esquimalt communities as well as the downtown small business area and the flourishing condo/townhouse market of Greater Victoria.

“It gives me great pride to see the entrepreneurial spirit alive in our members as they continue to grow and prosper. This purchase by the Hagel family will not only strengthen the prominence of the Castle Building Centre brand in the Greater Victoria area but is a fine example of how Castle members have the ability to be successful and flourish as part of the group.” Ken Jenkins, President

Owners Frank and Vicki Hagel have been in the lumber and building materials since the early 80’s and opened their first Castle location, Cook Street Castle, in 1986. A busy retail hardware and renovation store on Cook Street featuring the only “drive-thru” lumberyard in BC. Frank will continue to run the Cook Street location as Vicki and long-time General Manager Brent Cowling will spearhead the transition and operate the new Bay Street store, which began with the complete re-branding to Castle.

Bay Street Castle Building Centre sits on 2.6 acres of land on Bay Street with a 23,000 sq. ft. retail storefront and 9,000 sq. ft. warehouse space. The Bay Street Castle location will carry a complete range of lumber, hardware and building materials and be serviced by the over 20 experienced staff members who were retained as part of the acquisition.

    Vicki and Frank are excited about this opportunity and the potential it brings;

“We were thrilled when Brian Higgins of Baywest Rona approached us about buying his store, opportunities like this don’t come along every day. Frank and I are fortunate to have had great support from our community and valuable staff over the years. We think we have a good business model and the store’s vibe offers a positive shopping experience. We are looking forward to duplicating that in the Bay Street location. Although we have been Castle members for over 20 years, the Cook Street store adopted the Castle name in 2009. That has proven to be a pivotal decision, as we believe this to be the brand of the future for the independent building supply store in Canada!”
    Vicki Hagel, Owner

Cook Street Castle has been a strong contributor to the local economy for over 25 years and this acquisition will further support the community.

Our solution provides independent entrepreneurs the most profitable platform in the industry with no risk, liability or investment.

Rivest et Fils is a respected and successful chain of thriving LBM and hardware retail locations built on hard work, integrity and family values. Orgill Spring Dealer Market Success

    News Release March 3, 2014

Over 225 Castle members and staff representing an incredible 105 Castle Building Centre locations from across Canada flocked to Orlando this past week to experience the Hardlines buying power of Orgill. The Orgill market took over the Orange County Convention Center as thousands of independent hardware retailers gathered to see the latest and greatest that Orgill had to offer. Orgill continues to gain momentum as the Canadian Independent’s “One-Stop Hardware Solution” and continues to expand their Canadian-compliant offering with over 50,000 Canadian-compliant skus and continued growth within their Canadian customer support services commitment.

This year’s feature exhibit was the new 14,000 sq.ft. Kodiak Trail Hardware & Supply, a completely Canadian-compliant store featured at the Orgill Spring Dealer Market in Orlando. This new store is almost double the size of the Windsor Falls model featured in 2013 and displays the most comprehensive assortment of Canadian-compliant skus ever displayed at the Orgill market. “The number of Canada flags featured on our product displays has become so impressive in the last three years that soon there will be no need for differentiation. Vendors are motivated and willing to do what it takes to become Canadian Compliant.” Ron Beal, President of Orgill.

Kodiak Trail offered Castle dealers the opportunity to visualize this grand store footprint and were also able to develop a self-contained hardware store for their own location with a customized product assortment with the merchandising aids necessary to support it. This past year, Orgill also launched their North American e-commerce platform “Boost,” which includes a complete e-catalogue of Orgill products and a leading-edge eCommerce software that enables Independent’s to add, price and manage hardware and other LBM products in a fully functional online store within their own existing website. Many Castle locations have already taken advantage of this leading edge eCommerce solution.

Orgill’s commitment to the Canadian Independent as a leading edge hardware solution was solidified almost one year ago with the grand opening of their very first Canadian Distribution Centre in Mississauga, ON. Having this distribution centre on Canadian soil has helped bridge the gap and provide Canadian Independents with nationwide single source procurement. “Castle members now enjoy a well-rounded product assortment through our partners at Orgill and additional Canadian vendor products are being added weekly.” James Jones, Castle Vice President, National Marketing

Castle Building Centres Group welcomed over 45 independent prospects to the show this year looking to learn more about the Fastest Growing Hardware Solution in North America. “Now more than ever before, Canadian Independents from other banners are looking for a stable and risk-free hardware distribution model. By partnering with Orgill, Castle has been proven successful in delivering this solution to our membership nationwide, with no investment and no liability.” Ken Jenkins, Castle, President

Castle Member Awarded For Innovative Thinking

    News Release - October 31st, 2012 - Mississauga, ON
(left to right) Bruce Holman, Castle Business Development Manager - Doug Keeling, Castle Buyer - Vince Cavallo, Owner Lumberland North - Beverly Allen - Hardlines.ca.

Castle Building Centres Group would like to congratulate member Lumberland North in Brampton, ON; who through innovative thinking and design efforts were awarded the first-ever Marc Robichaud Award for Retail Innovation.

The award was presented last week at the 17th annual Hardlines Conference in Toronto. Owner Vince Cavallo and store manager Max Careri have successfully transformed a 40 year old family business into a state-of-art, one-stop shop for building materials and hardware complete with home decor centre and first class service. After moving the business to a new location only three years ago and having to compete with the over populated box store competitors; Lumberland began to create a niche by selling the "complete" project and this differentiation has proven to be a winning recipe.

This Brampton Castle Building Centres location offers the traditional lumber, building material and hardware product assortment for contractors and home builders but also features an innovative and consumer-friendly design centre. The centre features over 100 kitchen and bath vignettes catering to design conscious clientele with a selection of high-end contemporary designs, sleek faucets, countertops, tile and finishes.

As an independent Castle member; Lumberland enjoys the benefits of a well-respected retail brand with the strongest buying program in the industry for the independent. Castle members like Lumberland; have the freedom to evolve and make innovative decisions in real-time; when it really matters, resulting in maximized profits and success.

Congratulations to Vince Cavallo and staff of Lumberland North.

The Hardlines award was the first-ever for Retail Innovation and was named in honour of Marc Robichaud who passed away earlier this year in Meteghan Centre, NS at age 36. Marc too was an independent retailer who was considered a pioneer of innovative retailing.
