50 Years and Building
1963 Founded BOLD Lumber (Buying Organization of Lumber Dealers). Larry Marshall, owner of Newmarket Cash & Carry Plywood and Lumber Ltd., is appointed president and general manager.
1964 There are 20 BOLD shareholders operating 25 yards. Year-end purchases reach $1.6 million.
1965 Pool buying begins in local regions.
1966 First major marketing initiative: "Win a 1966 Mustang convertible."
1967 Member purchases for the year exceed $6.5 million with over 38 members.
1969 Rejects public offering and franchising concepts and affirms its commitment to independents.
1970s Expands east and west to become national. Embraced the Home Centre concept where retail display area is added to the lumberyard under the Castle Building Centre name. Purchases made by all shareholders exceed $20 million. One shareholder exceeds $1 million.
1975 Created new Castle Building Centre logo.
1980s Castle adopts the drive-through lumberyards concept.
1982 BOLD Lumber Ltd. officially becomes Castle Building Centres Group Ltd.
1985 Do-it-yourself trend leads to offering a wider range of consumer goods including its first private label branded CastleGard paint and stain.
1990 Increases the number of dealers, despite "big box" stores. Remains focused on lumber and building materials (LBM).
1993 30th Anniversary. Purchases through the group are $310 million.
1995 Launches the store development program and Castle's own magazine Contractor Advantage. First national business development manager is hired.
1996 Launches castle.ca website for members and consumers.
1997 CastleGard branded private label products now number over 150 SKUs.
1998 Committed to providing the best value and service.
2000 Developed All Install, a program designed to help both supply and installation.
2002 Enhances buying power of LBM with the formation of Reliance buying group. Registered Commercial Builders Supplies Inc. (CBS) a subsidiary of Castle.
2004 Member sales exceed $1 billion. Over 220 shareholders.
2005 Introduced CastleCare insurance, benefits, products and services.
2007 Castle declares its promise to be "Your trusted building supply partner." Castle develops a clear Retail, Commercial and Specialty strategy.
2009 Castle has six Business Development Managers committed to the success of its dealers in every province of Canada.
2010 Castle partners with Orgill, the world's largest independent hardware distributor, to provide Castle members with North American pricing, selection and service.
2011 Castle recruits over 30 new members. Castle declares "The Revolution has started."
2012 Castle recruits 33 new members to the Castle, CBS and Castle Specialty family. Castle achieves its most successful year on record for new membership and comparable store sales.
2013 Castle celebrates its landmark 50th Anniversary in 2013 - the first in the industry to celebrate this milestone. There were special events all year along, culminating in a $50,000 cash prize for one winner.
